MIRAMICHI REGIONAL HOSPITAL
Miramichi, New Brunswick
Date 1996
Client Province of New Brunswick
BDA worked as the site design and environmental planning sub-consultant for this $90 Million hospital complex. The design approach for the project was to establish a 'hospital in a park'. The site was totally wooded which required a careful analysis of the forest eco-system to ensure the design of the site layout was development to protect important tree stands.
The Miramichi Hospital is an example of a large institutional program that has been designed to 'fit into' an existing wooded landscape. The stormwater is managed in a sustainable fashion with the use of surface swales and holding ponds. Patient and employee amenities include a 1km on site walking trail loop, outdoor café and an enclosed exterior garden for patient and staff use.
The Miramichi Hospital project is recognized provincially as a model of integrating an institutional program within a natural environment. The site is managed as a meadow and woodland eliminating the need for herbicides and pesticides. This provides a healthy environment for patients and staff.
